AICAR
CAS: 2627-69-2
AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a cell-permeable AMPK activator widely used in metabolic research. Evans & Barish 2008 Nature Medicine showed exercise-mimetic effects in sedentary mice. 99.1% HPLC purity.
Specifications
For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption.
Mechanism of Action
Converted intracellularly to ZMP, which allosterically activates AMPK by mimicking AMP. AMPK activation triggers PGC-1a upregulation, fatty acid oxidation, GLUT4 translocation, and mitochondrial biogenesis.
Research FAQ
Why is AICAR called an exercise mimetic?
AICAR activates AMPK, the same energy-sensing kinase activated by exercise, producing downstream effects on fatty acid oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis, and endurance capacity without the mechanical stimulus of physical activity.
